Support for creating meaningful writing experiences!
We believe that the classroom is the best place to transform students' writing practice and knowledge. Our staff and consultants provide several services to support all instructors across the disciplines and across the curriculum as they integrate writing into their classroom. Please read about these opportunities below for more information.
Writing Services
A short presentation on the writing center!
Please consider inviting us to your class to present about the writing center. This short 10-15 minute presentation describes our 1-on-1 consulting service, our locations, and how to make an appointment. We also describe opportunities for employment and answer student questions.
This presentation can also be added to another in-class presentation.
In-class support for your students' writing!
The writing center can provide targeted support for writing in your class through workshops and in-class activity support.
In-class workshops
Writing center can collaborate with you to create specific workshops on writing topics relevant to your course. You and a writing center staff member will work together to prepare an experiential and engaging workshop on specific aspects of writing in your discipline or for your assignment.
Please note that we can help you design ways to integrate instruction and feedback on general writing topics (such as citation styles, revision strategies, editing) but limit our workshop development to specific instruction to support assignments or disciplinary writing. We do offer extracurricular workshops on these topics for all students which you can recommend to your students.
To discuss opportunities to develop a workshop for your class, please email director Enrique Paz (enrique.paz@siu.edu).
In-class activity support
If you are planning in-class writing activities, such as peer review or in-class drafting, the writing center can arrange for in-class support from a writing consultant. These consultants work with students, offering guidance and individualized attention during your activity. They can also help facilitate small group work or offer short advice to the class about writing topics.
To arrange for in-class support, email director Enrique Paz (enrique.paz@siu.edu). The director and you will discuss the activity, offer feedback, and what kind of support a consultant can provide.
Targeted workshop support outside of class.
In addition to our regular workshop series for students, the writing center offers service to develop extracurricular class targeted to support particular programs or specific classes. Examples of these kind of workshops have included:
- Resumes and Cover Letters for Engineers
- Common Mistakes and Tips for Success on Your Assignment
- Citation Practices in Social Science with APA
- The Style of Business Reports
- And more!
Our staff works with instructors and program administrators to develop, promote, and facilitate these workshops.
To discuss opportunities to create workshops for your class or program, please email director Enrique Paz (enrique.paz@siu.edu).
Support for making writing part of your class!
We recognize that most faculty members are not trained in the teaching of writing, so the writing center offers our expertise in writing instruction to complement your classroom. If you are considering how writing might be a meaningful part of our classroom, our faculty director and trained staff are available to consult with you about integrating writing into your courses.
We offer support to faculty and programs for developing meaningful and transformative writing experiences for students, including:
- Creating programmatic sequences around writing in your majors or college.
- Designing courses on writing in your discipline.
- Developing writing assignments or assignment sequences for courses.
- Using low-stakes writing-to-learn activities in your courses.
- And more!
For more information and to arrange a consultation, please email director Enrique Paz (enrique.paz@siu.edu).
